Water supplies may be cut in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Lack of inflows into Osmansagar and Himayatsagar has left the two reservoirs almost dry. Water Board officials said they will be curtailing supplies to some areas in the city shortly.
“As of date, only 0.037 tmc ft of water is available in Osman-sagar and 0.132 tmc ft of water in Himayatsagar. If Osmansagar does not get inflows, in the next five to six days, drawing of water from it will have to be stopped, as the quality of water is not good.
Likewise, if rains do not bring inflows into Himayatsagar, by month-end, some more areas in the city will have to face water shortages, said Water Board director Sundar Rami Reddy.
The city will be short of 40 MGD to 45 MGD of water per day if both the reservoirs dry up. Though some Krishna water will be diverted to areas in the city, where  normally water is supplied from Osmansagar and Himayatsagar, the officials said that they cannot overcome a shortage of 45 MGD, as other areas fed by Krishna water, would face shortfall, said a senior official.
Though there is abundant water in Singur, Manjeera and Nagarjunasagar, and would be enough to supply for more than a year, over 50 localities in Red Hills, Nampally, Good Shed area, Mangalhat and Naubat Pahad will face shortages if Osman-sagar and Himayatsagar dry up.
“This is because these areas are supplied with water from Osmansagar and Himayatsagar. 45 MGD of water is supplied daily from these two reservoirs, but due to poor inflows, less than 17 MGD is being drawn due to fear of both reservoirs going dry by August end. Even if 20 to 25 MGD of water is diverted from Krishna, there would be a shortage of 20 MGD,” said an official.
