West Bengal tops in suicides, Tamil Nadu second
West Bengal had the highest number of suicides in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu in 2011, according to the latest report of the National Crime Records Bureau.
While Tamil Nadu15,963 people take their lives during the year, West Bengal saw 16,492 people kill themselves, and accounted for 12.2 per cent of the suicides recorded in the country last year.
Maharashtra, with 15,947 suicides stood third, followed by Andhra Pradesh (15,077) and Karnataka (12,622). These five states together accounted for 56.2 per cent of the total suicides reported in India, the NCRB said. Uttar Pradesh, which has 16.5 per cent of country’s population, accounted for only 3.6 per cent of the suicides.
Delhi, with 1716 suicides, topped among the Union territories, followed by Puducherry with 557. The seven Union territories together accounted for 1.9 per cent of the 1.35 lakh suicides recorded in the country in 2011.
Family problems were responsible for 24.3 per cent of the suicides and illness for 19.6 per cent. Poverty was to blame in 1.7 per cent of the cases and love affairs for 3.4 per cent.
Drug abuse/addiction accounted for 2.7 per cent and dowry disputes drove nearly 2.4 per cent to suicide. Bankruptcy drove another 2.2 per cent to kill themselves, according to the bureau.
Worryingly, the country as a whole has seen a 25 per cent rise in the number of suicides over the last decade (2001–2011), from 1,08,506 in 2001 to 1,35,585 in 2011.
