When Suez's captain shed tears on daughter's shoulders

It was an emotional homecoming for MV Suez skipper Capt Wasi Ahmed who burst into tears when his daughter Laila greeted him on reaching the port here on Thursday after the crew were set free by Somali pirates.

The crew of the MV Suez, made up of 11 Egyptians, four Pakistanis, six Indians and a Sri Lankan, received an emotional welcome when the Pakistani naval ship PNS Zulfiqar carrying them anchored at Karachi harbour.

Somali pirates hijacked the Egyptian-owned ship in August last year. The pirates released the ship and the crew after a $2.1 million ransom was paid to them by a Pakistani organisation, the Ansar Burney Trust, named after the known human rights activist and former minister.

The daily Dawn reported that for Capt Ahmed stepping off the naval ship meant that the responsibility of taking care of the crew under his charge was almost over.

And when his daughter Laila embraced him, a tired and emotionally drained Capt Wasi wept as unabashedly as did little Laila.
