Why were Darbari, Mohindroo sent for baton rally: CBI

The Central probe agencies, including the CBI, have raised serious objections over why the arrested former officials of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) Organising Committee, T.S. Darbari and Sanjay Mohindroo, were sent to London for the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) last year when the event did not fall under their operational ambit. The CBI has also decided to question OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi in this connection on Wednesday.

According to sources, the CBI called the director general of the OC, V.K. Verma, a close aide of Kalmadi, at its headquarters in this regard on Monday. The CBI also seized documents related to all meetings of the “sports surfaces and equipment committee” and “centralised coordination committee for finalisation of overlays, sports surfaces and equipment” of the OC on Monday. The documents that have been seized include — the note sheet or office order for setting up of these committees and the minutes of all the meetings of these committees, sources added.
Sources added, “Questioning of the OC Chairman is now imminent. He is expected to appear before the CBI on Wednesday. The agency wants to know how Darbari and Mohindroo were allowed to visit London in connection with QBR. Why not the operational head concerned was taken into confidence before finalising OC members visit to London? Besides, the agency wanted to know the grounds on which the actual operational head, who needed to be in London, was not allowed to visit in connection with the QBR”.
Mr Kalmadi will be asked questions related to QBR and other Games contracts, sources added. The agency has also found that the OC incurred expenses on sending delegates to various states of India when the QBR was going across the country.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
