Will go till end, Sonia on LS polls
Congress president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Saturday scotched speculation of early elections by claiming that the government will complete its full term and come back to power. “Our aim is to go till the very end,” Mrs Gandhi told reporters after the inauguration of the National Media Centre here.
Countering her, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj claimed that the NDA is certain to form the next government.
The Congress president initially tried to steer clear of the question when asked by reporters whether the party would go in for polls after the passage of landmark legislations like the food security bill and the land acquisition bill. “I cannot say anything,” she remarked when another questioner posed the same query.
When journalists persisted, Mrs Gandhi gave the reply of going “till the very end”. There has been talk of Lok Sabha polls, due next year in April-May, being combined with the Assembly polls in some states later this year in November. The BJP has also been asking the government to seek an immediate mandate in the wake of the looming economic crisis.
