Will Kalmadi be able to face Parliament?
Will the controversial chairman of the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee Suresh Kalmadi be able to face the Lok Sabha when it will discuss the alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games projects next week, is a question being discussed in political circles.
While the Congress party had earlier refused to defend Mr Kalmadi, the sitting Lok Sabha member from Pune has been skipping the current session of Parliament ever since the issue came to the fore.
The Lok Sabha is likely hold a discussion on CWG preparations on Monday against the backdrop of the controversy on alleged corruption in Commonwealth Games projects.
The Congress-ruled UPA government which has successfully punctured the Opposition’s price rise issue, is on the defensive on the Commonwealth Games.
The issue of alleged large-scale corruption in the Games projects on Friday rocked the Lok Sabha with the entire opposition attacking the government accusing it of allowing “loot” of public money.
Members of the BJP, JD(U), Left parties and Samajwadi Party targeted the government on the issue.
The Left demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe charges of corruption in the games projects.
Parliamentary sources said the government has already asked the Speaker to list the discussion on the Games under Rule 193.
Sources also indicated that the government was open to the idea of extending the session by a week to make up for the time lost in the first week of the ongoing Monsoon Session due to protests by the Opposition on the price rise issue. The session is slated to conclude on August 27.
