Wisdom in quick solution: T-panel
The Srikrishna Committee, tasked to examine the demand for a separate state of Telangana, is reported to have carefully enlisted “multiple options” along with the “pros and cons” ranging from bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh, a united state or making Hyderabad a Union territory, among others. The committee, which is all set to submit its report to the home ministry this week, is believed to have chosen to steer clear of a decisive view on the matter though it feels that “wisdom lies in a quick solution” to the problem which has given rise to agitations over a long period of time.
The committee has also shed light on the situation in Rayalseema which has been projected as the most backward of the three regions of Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalseema, by a section of people.
The report is believed to have highlighted the sharp polarisation of views between people belonging to Telangana who are demanding a separate state and Rayalseema and coastal Andhra who want a united Andhra Pradesh. The committee has extensively examined the history of the demand and the consequent agitation. To study the prevailing conditions, the committee has visited more than 30 villages across the state and interacted with one and all to ascertain their views, before finalising the report.
In its report, the committee has examined the impact of the recent developments in the state on different sections of people such as women, children, students, minorities, other backward classes, scheduled castes and scheduled tribes. While Telangana Rashtriya Samithi chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his men are not prepared to settle for anything less that a separate Telangana state, the leaders who are fighting for a united Andhra Pradesh are equally adamant about maintaining the status quo.
Fearing a breakout of state-wide agitation as the panel submits its report, the Centre is rushing 2000 CRPF personnel to Hyderabad for deployment across the state. These forces would be in addition to the 24 companies (2400 personnel) of CRPF and 1000 Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel already stationed in Andhra Pradesh. However, once the committee submits is report, the government may have to move tactfully and draw up a political consensus to provide relief and succour to all sections of people in the state.
