Woman branded witch, raped, battling for life
As the Delhi gangrape victim has left an indelible mark on the psyche of the entire nation for her heroic battle against her rapists and later against death till her last breath, a tribal woman in a Naxal stronghold village in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district is passing through similar ordeals, now fighting for her life in a local hospital after being sexually and physically assaulted by five people.
According to a FIR filed in the Pakhanjor police station, the 36-year-old woman, mother of six children, was gangraped and then physically assaulted by five people, including her brother-in-law and the local sarpanch, late in the evening of December 23 in her home in the remote village of Allora. The traumatised woman was however admitted in the local government hospital two days later. Perhaps, too shocked to narrate her ordeals, she only reported about the physical assault on her by the accused in her first statement given to the police, without mentioning the gangrape.
“She was shifted to Bhanupratappur hospital the next day, where she told the doctors treating her that she was raped by five people in the village. A medical team has found injuries.”
