Woman flees after duping hundreds
A young woman has disappeared after allegedly cheating hundreds of youth of around `2.5 crores. Riya Bandopadhyay, the accused in her thirties, is a resident of Regent Park.
Opening an office named as Shreya Enterprise in Garia and Lake Town, she allegedly lured unemployed youths with job promises in the information technology and healthcare sectors. According to preliminary investigations around 1,700 job aspirants applied to her office through several agents recruited by her.
After collecting hefty amounts from them Ms Bandopadhyay recently shut down the two offices and had gone into hiding, a police officer said. On September 18, the applicants lodged a complaint against her with the Regent Park police station. The police is on a lookout for her now. During the probe the cops have found that she had issued some cheques as the return of money through her agents to those who did not get jobs. But the cheques bounced, an officer revealed. Meanwhile the artists of the Kolkata Police’s detective department (DD) have drawn a sketch of the miscreant who snatched the necklace of a woman in Dhakuria on Saturday morning.
Badal Dey, an eye-witness, said, “At around 1 am the DD’s artists came and drew the sketch of culprit as per my description.”
