Woman kills handicapped grandson

An old woman allegedly threw her one-and-a-half-year-old handicapped grandson in a river as she considered him to be 'unlucky' for her family, police said today.

The woman - Basanti, has been arrested for killing her grandson - Amit by throwing him in the Pandu river, they said.

Maya, Amit's mother, complained to the police after Basanti and the child had been missing from the home since June 19.

The police found Basanti at her parents' house and she broke down during investigation and confessed that she had committed the crime with the help of her other son, Chhotu. She said that Amit's father had died immediately after his birth, so she considered Amit to be unlucky for the family.

The police are on the lookout for Chhotu and are probing the matter further.
