Woman raped by relative in tourist lodge
Another woman was allegedly raped in Kolkata. This time, however, the accused is a relative of the victim. The incident took place at a lodge in Bhowanipore in south Kolkata on Saturday late night. The woman, a 28-year-old housewife from Jangipara in Hooghly, had come to the city to visit her ailing mother at Calcutta Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) with her brother-in-law Biswajit Porel.
The woman and Mr Porel checked into the Aditya Guest House at Turf Road at around 10 am, said deputy commissioner of police (central) D.P. Singh on Sunday. At night, they returned to the lodge and Biswajit raped her at around 11.15 pm. Following the incident, the accused and the owner of the lodge, Annapurna Singh, fled, a police officer disclosed. Early on Sunday, the victim went to the Bowbazar police station and lodged a complaint of rape. The police has registered a case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code based on her allegation and informed her family.
In the morning, a joint police team from the Bowbazar and Kalighat police station inspected the lodge and collected the bed-sheet and other items from the room and sent them for forensic examination. They suspect that the culprit had links with the lodge-owner.
The victim also underwent medical test at CMCH.
Probing into the case, the police found that initially a family stayed at the house which was later turned into the lodge after the hand-over of ownership.
