A senior police officer has caused a stir by marrying her constable-driver who is several years younger to her in Tamil Nadu.

Additional superintendent of police (prohibition enforcement) Umaiyal married her driver, constable Gopanna at Chennai a couple of days back, sources said.

They said Gopanna has since sent his resignation to save himself from the embarrassment of driving his wife in the uniform of his superior.

Sources also said the couple did not invite anyone from the police department for the wedding. “It is their personal matter.

The department has nothing to do with this”, said a senior officer when asked about reports that the police top brass had launched an enquiry into Umaiyal’s conduct.

Recruited as deputy superintendent of police through the state public service commission’s group-one examination in 2003, Umaiyal had got into another controversy earlier due to her alleged involvement with a sub-inspector.

Following a complaint from the SI’s wife, she was placed under suspension while the SI was transferred out.

After the suspension was revoked, Umaiyal was posted as Additional SP at Kancheepuram in the prohibition enforcement wing when love blossomed between her and her constable-driver Gopanna.
