Women groups: Kamat is ‘sexist’
In today’s scenario, the last thing a politician wants is to be branded “sexist” for his remarks, especially when the leader’s party is headed by a woman. While Congress president Sonia Gandhi may decide to let the matter go, Goa chief minister Digambar Kamat is facing flak from all directions at home for his remarks on Saturday that “women should not pursue politics”.
Women’s rights groups in the state are already up in arms against the CM. “We were getting ready to hold a demonstration against the chief minister’s behaviour with the five women who had gone to visit him last week. He had turned them out for not having an appointment and told them that he did not need their votes. After his comments on Saturday, our case against him becomes stronger. He is doing nothing to uplift the plight of the people, instead is going around making such remarks,” said Ashu Goyal of a women’s right group.
Goa State Commission for Women former member Sabina Martins termed his comments sexist and callous.
