Yechury rejects Mamata poll allegations
The CPI(M), which accused the Trinamul of having links with Maoists, also referred to home minister P. Chidambaram “concurring’’ to the West Bengal government’s decision to reject a CBI probe into the Gyaneswari Express train tragedy. The CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday dismissed Trinamul chief and railway minister Mamata Banerjee’s allegations that the civic polls in Bengal were “rigged’’.
Mr Yechury said that West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and the home minister have agreed on not involving the CBI in the probe of the train accident as the state police have almost cracked the case. “The home minister held a discussion (on the train accident) with the West Bengal chief minister. Mr Buddhadeb told him the state police have almost cracked the case and if the case is handed over to the CBI, it will delay the investigation. Both of them agreed to wait till the report comes,” Mr Yechury said.
Ms Banerjee has been demanding a CBI inquiry into the accident, which she has blamed on her political rivals. Mr Chidambaram on Monday virtually rebuffed Ms Banerjee’s claims by saying that the needle of suspicion was pointing towards the Maoists. The CPI(M) on Tuesday criticised Trinamul’s closeness to the Maoists.
