Yechury: Take action on Sen in this session
CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury on Wednesday said that the impeachment proceedings against Calcutta high court judge Soumitra Sen should be undertaken during the current session which ends on December 13.
BJP deputy leader in Rajya Sabha S.S. Ahluwalia and CPI leader Sitaram Yechury, who was the first signatory of the petition seeking impeachment of the judge, told reporters that a decision on the timing when the formal resolution would be taken up for transaction has to be taken by the business advisory committee. Mr Yechury said that the rules of the parliamentary procedures provided that a decision on the issue will have to be taken in the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament itself as the report has been tabled. In all, 58 MPs, including Mr Yechury, have signed the resolution seeking impeachment of Justice Soumitra Sen and their petition was admitted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari. He had appointed the inquiry panel headed by Supreme Court Justice Sudershan Reddy. Justice Mukul Mudgal, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana high court and noted jurist Fali S. Nariman were the members of this panel.
The Congress on Wednesday, meanwhile, gave signals that it could support the impeachment proceedings against Calcutta high court judge Soumitra Sen noting it is for highest probity and integrity in public life.
“Let me study the details of the report. I have not studied it so far. But let me categorically say that whether it be the legislature, executive or judiciary, we would certainly like to see that the highest degree of probity and integrity is maintained,” party spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajnan told reporters at the AICC briefing.
