Yeddy fights to the bitter end
Beleaguered Karnataka chief minister B. S. Yeddyurappa and his supporters have drawn-up short-term and long term strategies to counter Lokayukta Justice N. Santosh Hegde’s report on illegal mining and senior central leaders of the BJP who have sought the leader’s resignation.
As a part of short-term strategies, his supporters would brief the media as part of an initiative to contain the damage to the image of Mr Yeddyurappa. This would be followed by a more serious effort aimed at causing discomfiture for Mr Yeddyurappa’s successor and the party through a revision petition against the Supreme Court judgment on restoration of membership of 11 ruling party legislators. Sources said the long-term strategy include approaching various courts in the guise of seeking clarifications on the veracity of the report and also planning to approach the higher bench in the Supreme Court challenging the division bench order that had set aside the order of Speaker K.G. Bopaiah on disqualification of 11 legislators.
Speaking to this newspaper, a highly placed source said Mr Yeddyurappa has found that it was the best method to maintain control over the party. “Even legal experts have expressed their opinion that the case can be brought before a division bench of the Supreme Court, as the verdict on the disqualification of legislators has failed to tackle — Aaya Ram-Gaya Ram — clause of Anti-defection law. The verdict on reinstating the disqualified legislators has not thrown light on this clause. So, the issue can be brought before a division bench,” the source added.
The source said Mr Yeddyurappa has constituted a committee of legal experts to pick holes in the report of Justice Hegde. As part of this strategy, several leaders like housing minister V. Somanna and Reddy brothers would address press conferences as soon as the legal experts provide them details of loopholes in the mining report.
