Jaya assures support to nuke plant protesters
AGE CORRESPONDENT
THOOTHUKUDI, OCT. 13
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Thursday came out in support of the people protesting against the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project (KNPP), assuring that the government would act on their wishes.
“The Tamil Nadu government respects the sentiments of the local people and will act according to their wishes,” she said, adding, “I am with you on this issue.”
The chief minister’s statement drew wide applause from the people in Thoothukudi where she was on an election campaign.
But the 10,000 and more anti-nuke activists who had gathered near the power plant at Koodankulam since 6.30 am, saw the statement more as an election gimmick made to win votes for the party. “This is nothing but a hollow promise made to appease people blocking all roads leading to the nuclear plant at Koodankulam since Thursday morning,” coordinator of the anti-nuke protest, S. P. Uthayakumar said.
