Youth abducts cousin for money, arrested
The police has arrested a 22-year-old youth for allegedly kidnapping his 10-year-old cousin for money. The accused chose to abduct a family member so that he could stay updated on the police’s progress, but made the mistake of using his cellphone during the crime, which led to his arrest within 48 hours after the case was registered.
According to police sources, Mudassar Sheikh (10), a Class 5 student studying in a municipal school in Govandi, was kidnapped on Friday.
His father Shamsuddin, who works as an assistant at a general store, received a call at around 7.30 pm on Friday. The caller said that Mudassar was in his custody and that Mr Sheikh better deliver `2 lakh to Swargate in Pune. Mr Sheikh took the call to be a joke and forgot about it, till he got one more call half an hour later, asking if the money was ready. He then asked the person to stop fooling around, the caller told him to check if his son had come home from school yet.
“Mr Sheikh called his wife and learnt that his son was missing. He then rushed to the Shivaji Nagar police station and registered a complaint. Even as he was leaving the police station, the kidnapper called again, and said that he had made a huge mistake by going to the police, and would pay for it. Mr Sheikh rushed back inside and informed the duty officer.
The process to trace the location of the caller’s number had already begun by then,” said an officer with the crime branch.
The caller’s last call made the police suspect that the accused was a family member, and they moved Mudassar’s family to an undisclosed location to isolate them from their relatives. In the meantime, the police received registration details of the caller’s number, which turned out to be in the name of Mudassar’s cousin Muzammil Sheikh.
