Youth dies in police custody in J-K; 3 policemen suspended
A youth, suspected to be involved in killing of a businessman, died in police custody in north Kashmir prompting the state government to suspend three policemen following the incident, which was termed by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah as 'inexcusable'.
As the news of the incident spread in the apple town of Sopore, shopkeepers pulled down the shutters immediately fearing unrest.
The presence of police was strengthened on the road to prevent any untoward incident.
The government also attached the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Sopore) and suspended three police officials under whose custody the incident took place.
28-year-old Nazim Rashid alias Anjum, resident of Krankshiven locality in Sopore town, died in the police custody after he was picked up yesterday in connection with the murder case of a businessman Mohammed Ashraf.
Ashraf was killed on July 28 by unidentified assailants.
During investigations and statements of other accused, the name of Rashid, son of a retired police officer, had surfaced, and he was called up for questioning yesterday.
However, he died during the police custody in the intervening night of July 30 and 31.
Minister of State for Home Nasir Aslam Wani immediately summoned all top police officials and held a series of meetings.
He directed the police to take stern action and also ordered a magisterial enquiry into the incident. When contacted, Wani termed the incident as 'unfortunate' and promised that the guilty would be brought to book at the earliest.
"Let's wait for the autopsy and enquiry report," he said refusing to divulge any further information.
