1 dead, 6 missing after boat capsizes off Mexico
One person has died and six others were missing after a 100-foot fishing boat capsized and sank off the coast of Mexico's Baja California.
The U.S. Coast Guard was assisting the Mexican navy early Monday in the search for the six missing in the Sea of Cortez, Coast Guard Petty Officer Pamela Boehland said.
There were 44 people, including more than two dozen Americans aboard the boat when it capsized around 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, Boehland said. It took a while for authorities to be notified because the boat capsized in a remote area and some of the survivors had to swim to shore and walk for a while before they could get help, she said.
The Coast Guard would be launching a helicopter Monday morning to help in the search for the missing.
Thirty-seven survivors were alive and accounted for, including 27 Americans, Boehland said. The others aboard the boat were Mexican, she said.
