100 drunk drivers nabbed in Melbourne

A total of 100 drivers were nabbed because of drunk driving during a police operation in Melbourne Saturday, a media report said.

A 24-year-old woman had a blood alcohol reading five times over the legal limit, while an 18-year-old learner driver tested positive for methamphetamines and cannabis, after being pulled over for displaying no "L-plate" and without the required accompanying responsible driver, Australia's AAP news agency reported.

The operation called Ring of Steel — deployed 200 police officers, who breath-tested a total of 9,748 motorists in nine breath-testing sites covering all city exits. The Police Inspector Stephen Mutton said the operation targeted drink and drug drivers as they headed out of Melbourne to their homes in the suburbs.
