12 killed in Karachi shooting spree

At least 12 people were killed and 10 injured in separate firing incidents in Pakistan's Karachi city since Tuesday, a media report said on Wednesday.

Some bodies, showing signs of torture, have been recovered from Kachra Mandi, Kemari, Gulistan-i-Johar and Baldia Town areas, Geo TV quoted officials as saying. At least two of the victims had been abducted.

Fayyaz Leghari, a senior police official, said two rival groups clashed in Mujahis Colony Tuesday night, triggering the violence. He said the police had been deputed in the troubled areas "but the killings do not reflect any political undertones”.

Over 2,000 people have lost their lives in incidents of targeted killings in Karachi as the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) fight it out for political control of the populous city.

Kidnapping-for-ransom has also reached an all time high in Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city. Several attempts by mediators to broker peace in the city have not yielded any positive result.
