24 militants, 3 Pak soldiers killed in gun battle
About 150 Taliban militants attacked five security posts in the restive Mohmand tribal region in northwest Pakistan early on Friday, triggering a gun battle that killed three soldiers and 24 terrorists, security officials said.
Twelve soldiers were injured in the fighting, officials of the paramilitary frontier corps said.
Other officials said the posts targeted by the militants are located in Baizai and Safi areas of the semi-autonomous tribal region.
The militants simultaneously targeted the five check posts at 1.15 am but their attacks were repulsed, the security officials said.
The militants left behind the bodies of the dead while fleeing, they added.
The Pakistan Army conducted several offensives against the Taliban in Mohmand Agency though on Friday’s attack showed that they retain the ability to mount attacks on the security forces.
The region is also used by militants to cross over to Afghanistan, where they attack US and allied forces.
