31 amateur fishermen rescued in Curonian Bay
Thirty-one amateur fishermen carried away on an ice block into the Curonian Bay were rescued, Kaliningrad emergency situations department spokesman Alexei Baranov said.
"The ice block carrying 31 fishermen started to drift off the Kashirskoye village at noon. Air-cushioned ships Argo and Gepard and an aero-boat were sent to their rescue," he said on Sunday, adding that several shuttle trips were made.
This is the second fishermen emergency in the Curonian Bay this December. eleven fishermen were rescued on December 5.
Although the emergency situations ministry had posted thin ice alerts, the fishermen traveled far from the shore and found themselves blocked by a 50-meter-wide stretch of clean water.
It has been snowing in the Kaliningrad region for two days. The wind is strong.
