50,000 rebel prisoners missing in Libya

Libyan rebels have said they freed more than 10,000 prisoners arrested by Gaddafi forces during the uprising that began in March, but claim there were still 50,000 missing.

Rebel spokesman Ahmed Omar Bani said that over the past months, between 57,000 and 60,000 rebels were arrested by Gaddafi's regime.

"Many people in Tripoli are now discovering mass graves around former detention centres and the prison in Abu Slim," he said.

Mustafa Abdel Jalil, chairman of the rebel National Transitional Council (NTC) on Monday said Gaddafi was still a threat even if his 42 years of power may have ended.

"I call for continued protection from NATO and its allies from this tyrant. He is still a threat, not just for Libyans but for the entire world," Jalil said.

Gaddafi's whereabouts are still not known.
