5.8 quake shakes Iran, no word on casualties
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake jolted south-eastern Iran on Saturday, the country's state television reported.
There was no word on casualties or damage. The TV's website said the quake struck in the Negar region of Kerman province at 11.22 am, an area about 670 miles south of the capital, Tehran.
The US Geological Survey put the quake's strength at magnitude 5.3. Saturday's earthquake came only a day after a magnitude 5.7 quake injured 170 people in the northeast city of Torbat-e Heydariyeh, damaging several villages in the region and temporarily disrupting communications.
Iran is located on seismic fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. It experiences at least one slight earthquake every day on average. Some 26,000 people were killed by a magnitude 6.6 quake that flattened the historic south-eastern city of Bam in 2003.
