6.9 earthquake hits northern Argentina: US govt
A strong earthquake measuring 6.9 hit an area in northern Argentina early on Saturday, the US government reported.
The epicentre of the tremor, which occurred at 6:56 local time (0956 GMT), was located 151 kilometres (94 miles) Northeast of the city of Santiago del Estero, according to the US Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
