Anders Behring Breivik: the Norwegian gunman's erratic side

Since his arrest on July 22, 2011 when he killed 77 people in twin attacks in Norway, Anders Behring Breivik has put his erratic side on show, making odd requests and claims.

In the first hours after his arrest, when he presented himself as a 'commander of the Knights Templar', he demanded that the Norwegian government, royal family and military all be deposed and that he be named the head of the Norwegian army.

At his first court hearing on July 25, he asked to be allowed to speak in English and wear a uniform, the same one he is seen wearing in pictures he published just prior to the massacre. His requests were refused.

When he was told he would have to undergo a psychiatric evaluation, he requested that it be carried out by a Japanese psychiatrist, because he thought someone from Japan would better understand his 'concept of honour'. That request was also denied.

He told the two Norwegian psychiatrists who examined him that when he lived with his mother, on at least one occasion he wore a mask in order to avoid catching her sinus infection.

He also told them it was necessary to create five 'land reservations' for the reproduction of ethnic Norwegians, and said he was working on solutions to protect the genetic make-up of Nordic people, eradicate diseases and reduce the divorce rate.

At another court hearing on February 6, he called for his immediate release and asked to be awarded the War Cross with three swords, Norway's highest military honour.

A first psychiatric evaluation found him to be psychotic and criminally insane. A second evaluation has been carried out, the results of which are to be published on Tuesday.

It will ultimately be up to the judges to determine the question of his sanity at the end of the trial. Depending on their decision, he will either be sentenced to prison or to a closed psychiatric ward.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
