Bangladesh HC adjourns Yunus hearing
The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Wednesday adjourned hearing on the two petitions filed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus and nine Grameen Bank directors challenging Yunus' removal as the bank's managing director.
A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice A.B.M. Khairul Haque said it will hear the petition filed by Yunus for withdrawing its Tuesday's order one week after the reopening of the Supreme Court following a 16-day vacation.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by Yunus challenging a high court verdict upholding a Bangladesh Bank order removing him as managing director of Grameen Bank, Star Online, web site of The Daily Star reported.
The hearing on the petition may be held May 2 as the court will reopen April 24, the court said.
The apex court also fixed the same day for hearing another petition filed by nine Grameen Bank directors against the high court verdict.
The Tuesday ruling capped a month-long dispute between Yunus and the government over the right of the 'banker to the poor' to continue as managing director of the bank.
On March 2, the central bank removed 71-year-old Yunus from the post, saying he violated the bank's retirement regulation that requires an official to stand down at 60.
Yunus said his dismissal was illegal and that the government was trying to take control of the bank.
