Building collapses in Dhaka, 14 die
A four-story apartment building collapsed in Bangladesh’s capital and its debris buried some nearby shanties, killing at least 14 people and leaving several others trapped, authorities said on Wednesday.
Fire official Abdus Salam said some of those trapped were feared dead.
Rescuers recovered four bodies after 10 bodies were pulled earlier from the wreckage and six injured people were rescued and taken to hospital, Mr Salam said. There were casualties in the tin-roof shanties, he said. Army troops joined the rescue work. “We see more people crushed under the debris,” Mr Salam said from the site of the accident in Dhaka’s central Tejgaon district.

Cyclone heads to Pak, 170 boats missing
Islamabad: At least 170 boats lost contact with control room on Wednesday in Pakistan’s Karachi city as cyclone Phet closed in.
“The cyclone is just 900 kilometres away from Karachi,” said an official of the meteorological department. “Navy helicopters have launched search operation for the missing fishermen. Meteorological department has warned fishermen against going to open sea and directed them to back up by evening,” he said. According to Met department, the cyclone is assuming more fury 900 kilometres to southwest of Karachi. The ferocious hurricane would make landing at Pakistan’s coastline after 24 hours, as it is likely to force entry into Sindh coastal areas at night between Friday and Saturday.

Malik: Taliban plan bigger Punjab attack
Islamabad: Pakistan interior minister Rehman Malik on Wednesday said that Punjabi Taliban is conspiring to carry out bigger terrorist attacks in the Punjab province.
“We have reports of their plans and we are trying to avert any loss,” Mr Malik said.
He said that banned organisations Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Lashkar-e-Taiba are involved in Model Town, Ghari Shahu firing incidents that killed over 90 member of the minority Ahmedi community.
