Charles draws with President

London/New Delhi, Sept. 27: The President, Ms Pratibha D. Patil, and Prince Charles are likely to share honours at the inauguration of the Delhi Commonwealth Games. While Prince Charles will read out Queen Elizabeth II’s message which ends with the Games being declared “open”, the President will say, “Let the Games begin.”

The Indian side was keen that Ms Patil should inaugurate the Games since she ranked higher in protocol than the Prince, who would only be representing the monarch who is the head of state and ceremonial head of the Commonwealth

Sources said the compromise was worked out following parleys between Delhi and London over who would do the honours in the absence of Queen Elizabeth II, who has decided to send Prince Charles as her representative. The British monarch will be missing the event for the first time in 44 years.

A Clarence House spokesperson stated: “There is no row. Both the Prince of Wales and the President of India will have a prominent role in the opening ceremony in Delhi. We cannot be specific about the choreography but the Prince will read out the Queen’s Baton message, ending by declaring the Games open.”
