China school attacker gets death term
A Chinese court sentenced a man to death on Saturday for an attack on a school that left 29 children and three kindergarten teachers hurt in April.
The attack was one of five major assaults against schoolchildren in the last two months that have left 17 dead and more than 50 wounded.
The Taizhou intermediate court in the eastern province of Jiangsu found Xu Yuyuan guilty of attempted murder, the official state Xinhua news agency reported. The 47-year-old unemployed Xu told the court he was venting his anger against society in the April 29 attack, the report said. Telephones at the court rang unanswered on Saturday. China has ordered tighter security at schools following another school attack on Wednesday, the deadliest so far. In that attack, a man broke into a pre-school with a cleaver and killed seven children. —AP

Women must wear veil: Saeed
Lahore, May 15: JuD chief Hafiz Mohammed Saeed has asked Muslim men to “make their women observe pardah” and criticised co-education saying it is perverting the youth of Pakistan.
Delivering the sermon during Friday prayers at the JuD’s Jamia Masjid Al-Qadsia at Chowburji in Lahore, Saeed described the ban imposed by France and other European countries on wearing the “hijab” and constructing minarets in mosques as a “conspiracy against Muslims.”
“Tell the Europeans (by making your women wear a veil) how important it (the veil) is for a Muslim woman,” he said on Friday.
