Clegg: ‘Arrogant’ Tories think they have won it
May 3: Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg’s support may have fallen compared to the steep high of the last week, but the possibility of a hung Parliament has increased his chances of being the kingmaker in this election.
Mr Clegg was on the offensive on Monday morning as he attacked Tory leader David Cameron’s “breathtaking arrogance” for assuming that he would win the election and for discussing his plans for government if elected this week. “What kind of change do the Conservatives offer? Have you seen the newspapers this morning? David Cameron, with breathtaking arrogance, is already measuring up the curtains for No. 10 before you have even voted,” Mr Clegg said at a rally in Blackheath, southeast London, which had more than 500 LibDem supporters, including a large number of former Gurkha soldiers and their families, who greeted him with yellow Nepalese scarves.
“Telling you what he’s going to do with Britain, when it’s not for him to tell you what to do with this country. It’s for you to tell us, the politicians, what kind of future you want. I have a simple message for David Cameron: in this country you don’t inherit power, you have to earn it,” Mr Clegg, who was accompanied by his wife Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, said. His supporters kept up a refrain of “I agree with Nick” as he spoke at the open-air rally. Mr Clegg’s wife is a international trade lawyer and is very rarely seen accompanying her husband during campaigning.
