Dalai Lama slams China on treatment of Nobel prize winner
Criticising China's irate response to awarding of Nobel Peace Prize to jailed dissident Liu Xiabao, exiled Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Monday said Beijing must transform itself into a transparent society.
The Chinese government does “not appreciate different opinions at all”, the Tibetan leader told Kyodo news agency at Narita International Airport while on his way from Mumbai to US.
Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, said the Chinese government must change to “build an open transparent society and this is the only way to save all the people of China”.
Asked about the treatment of Liu, who is currently imprisoned, the Dalai Lama said China had to transform itself and pointed out that even Premier Wen Jiabao had said political change was necessary.
The Tibetan spiritual leaders comments came in the wake of Chinese government calling Liu “a criminal” and criticising the Norwegian Noble Committee for honouring members of dissident.
