EU alarmed at Ireland political crisis
London, Nov. 23: The European Union is alarmed by the growing political crisis in Ireland as the calls for removal of Prime Minister Brian Cowen increased on Tuesday.
Mr Cowen, who on Monday night declared his intention to call a general election in the New Year, is now facing a no-confidence motion that was tabled against him by Sinn Fein on Tuesday.
The Green party, which is the junior coalition partner in the 166-member lower house of Irish parliament, on Monday called for elections in Ireland.
Mr Cowen has been accused of misleading and betraying the Irish people, mismanaging the economy and selling the Irish sovereignty to the IMF and EU.
Ireland’s political crisis has alarmed the European Union as it has just started the formal process of applying for up to £77 billion European Union bailout package.
