Fourth body found in Malaysian boat tragedy
The Malaysian authorities said Monday they had recovered the body of a Singaporean killed along with three others when a boat capsized, while the search for one more missing person continued.
The four Singaporeans, who were among 29 people on a fishing boat, died when their wooden vessel tipped over in rough seas off southern Johor state Sunday afternoon as they headed back to the mainland from an island fishing trip.
Local district police chief Mohammad Nor Rashid confirmed to AFP the body of the latest victim, a 41-year-old man, was recovered Monday morning and was due to be sent back to Singapore later in the day.
He said the search for the remaining missing person, also Singaporean, was ongoing.
The Police have detained the boat's captain and owner for questioning and have said early investigations showed there were no life jackets on board.
The accident was the second major tragedy to affect foreign tourists in Malaysia in a week.
Last Monday, 28 tourists — most of them Thai — were killed when the driver of their bus lost control near a sharp bend, sending the vehicle crashing through a road divider and into a ditch.
