Gilani takes dig at Sharif
Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that he cannot resign to fulfil a wish of any individual.
“Everybody has wishes and its their right. But I can’t resign to fulfill anybody’s wish or dream,” said Mr Gilani.
Talking to a lawyers’ delegation in Lahore, Mr Gilani said he will not write a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.
“Not only me, any future Pakistan People’s Party Prime Minister will not do so. We will not write against President Zardari”, the beleaguered PM said.
On Thursday, Mr Gilani was convicted by the Supreme Court for refusing to write to the Swiss authorities to reopen corruption cases against Mr Zardari. He was given a 30-second sentence.
Opposition parties, led by the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), have been demanding resignation of Mr Gilani as they think a convicted person cannot lead the country.
“Nawaz Sharif (PML-N chief) has his own dreams. He can even dream of becoming PM again as e have lifted the restriction on anyone to become PM for a third time. But he has to wait for the general elections. If people vote for him, he can be the PM again”, Mr Gilani said.
