'Hotel Rwanda' manager in trouble over 'terror funds'
The hotel manager whose efforts to save more than a thousand Tutsi refugees from genocide, portrayed in the movie 'Hotel Rwanda', may face charges over allegations that he sent money to opposition commanders, a top prosecutor said late on Tuesday.
The former manager, Paul Rusesabagina, helped finance terrorist activities by sending money to the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor, Martin Ngoga, has not filed charges but has asked the United States for help in gathering evidence on some financial transactions that he said originated in San Antonio, where Mr Rusesabagina has a home.
Mr Rusesabagina has denied the allegations, saying that he had not sent any money to Rwanda in years and that the government was conducting a smear campaign against him because he had opposed President Paul Kagame in the past.
“It is the latest step in a campaign against me by the Rwandan government that has included public insults, lies and physical harassment,” he said.
