House rebukes Obama on US role in Libya
The House has adopted a resolution rebuking President Barack Obama for dispatching US military forces against Libya without congressional approval.
The vote on Friday was 268-145. The White House objected, saying the measure was “unnecessary and unhelpful”.
The measure by House leader John Boehner says the President has failed to provide a “compelling rationale” for the nearly three-month-old operation to aid rebels battling Muammar Gaddafi’s forces. Democrats and Republicans complained that Mr Obama ignored the Congress’ constitutional authority to declare war. The non-binding measure insists that Mr Obama provide the Congress with details on the scope of the mission and its costs within 14 days. —AP
