Hundreds of Myanmar fishermen 'still missing'

Hundreds of fishermen are still missing in Myanmar several weeks after a fierce storm, while thousands of others have been rescued, authorities said on Monday.

"According to the latest figures we have, about 600 fishermen are still missing. We do not know whether they were killed at sea or reached somewhere," a Myanmar official said.

About 6,000 others have been found alive. The authorities are still searching for the missing, the official said.

The Myanmar navy sent ships to scour the sea for hundreds of fishing boats after rough weather caused waters around its southern coast to become treacherous in mid-March.

The storm was followed by a strong earthquake which struck eastern Myanmar on March 24, leaving more than 70 people dead.

Southwestern Myanmar was devastated by Cyclone Nargis in 2008 which left 138,000 people dead or unaccounted for, mostly in the vulnerable river delta region.
