Indian, 35, kills self in Abu Dhabi
A 35-year-old Indian national from Gujarat allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from the bow of a boat in the UAE, where he was working for the last two years. Kanti Beku Tandil, the captain of a fishing boat, hanged himself to death from the bow of his vessel on Sunday while the boat was harboured at the Mina wharf in Abu Dhabi, the Emirati capital.
The incident happened while hundreds of fishermen, working on similar boats docked in the area, left for their regular noon break.

Ferry sinks in Bangla, 16 feared dead
Dhaka : Up to 16 people are believed to have drowned in north-eastern Bangladesh after an overloaded passenger ferry sank, the police said on Thursday after calling off search and rescue operations.
The ferry sank in Kishorganj district, about 100 km north of Dhaka, on Wednesday, local police chief Subrata Kumar Saha said. “We have found the bodies of seven children, two women and one man and six other passengers are still unaccounted for,” Mr Saha said. —AFP

Indian on Interpol list held in US
Chicago : An Indian man, who is on an Interpol list and is wanted for smuggling cigarettes in UK, has been arrested at the city’s O’Hare International Airport as he was about to board a flight to India.
Anis Gulamras Vohora, 39, was on an “Interpol lookout” list and was stopped by Chicago Customs and Border Protection officers as he was boarding a flight to India over the weekend. He was arrested by CBP officers pending confirmation of extradition to the United Kingdom.

Russia mine blast toll reaches 66
Moscow : Russian rescue workers on Thursday stopped searching for 24 men still missing after a mine disaster that killed at least 66 because of fears of new underground blasts, the emergencies ministry said.
“Search operations have been halted,” Pavel Plat, an emergencies ministry official, said.
Fires burning in the Siberian mine and high levels of methane gas could lead to new explosions, he said in a statement. —Reuters

8 die in blast in Russia’s Dagestan
Moscow : Eight people were killed on Thursday in a bomb attack in Russia’s southern region of Dagestan, the latest unrest in the troubled North Caucasus, officials said.
“At around 10.30, an explosive device went off as repair workers drove by in a vehicle,” the investigative committee of Russian prosecutors said in a statement.
“As a result, eight people died and four police officers escorting the workers were wounded.” —AFP
