Indonesian terrorist breaks into tears, asking forgiveness for wrongdoings
An Indonesian terrorist who was involved in Bali bombing in 2002 that killed more than 200 foreigners and local people broke into tears on Monday to convey his sorry, asking for forgiveness from families of the perished people in the deadly bombing.
"I am Hisyam bin Ali Zein, popularly known as Umar Patek, regret to my partaking in Bali bombing," said Umar, who assembled the bombs detonated by terrorist group in Bali in October 2002, in the trial in West Jakarta state court.
Umar was arrested in Pakistan early last year, believed of planning to meet Osama bin laden who was later known of hiding in Pakistani city of Abottabad.
Besides asking forgiveness from the victims' families, Umar also asked forgiveness from Indonesian government and Bali provincial government for the loss of hundreds of lives and costs that had to be beared by the governments regarding the bombing.
"May the verdict from this trial can be the redemption to all of my sins. I hope that they can forgive me. I ask forgiveness from the deepest of my heart," the terrorist, whose head was priced at 1 million U.S. dollars by U.S. government, said, breaking into tears in the trial. Seven U.S. citizen were killed in the bomb blasts that occurred in two fully packed cafes in Bali at that time.
Umar fled to southern Philippines after the blast. His presence was sniffed in terrorist camp in Jantho, Aceh province that dismantled by Indonesian apparatus in early 2010. Umar was also involved in the attack on several churches during Christmas eve in 2000.
Besides charged of committing terrorism activities, Umar Patek is also charged of committing passport forgery and illegal armament ownership.
All of his terrorist colleagues in the group that detonated bombs in Bali had been executed to death by Indonesian apparatus after undergoing civil trials. Some others were killed by Indonesian anti-terror squad during several raids conducted in several cities.
