Indra Nooyi's sister Chandrika Tandon in race for Grammy
New York: She has decades of managerial experience and now, India-origin Chandrika Krishnamurthy Tandon, sister of PepsiCo Chief Indra Nooyi, is in the race for a Grammy award. Tandon's work Om Namo Narayanaya: Soul Call, which features Sanskrit chants, has been nominated for a Grammy Award in the 'Best Contemporary World Music Album' category.
The annual awards, given by the US National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, recognise outstanding musical works. The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony will be held on February 13.
A classical singer and an alumni of Madras Christian College, Tandon is the chairman of US-based financial advisory firm Tandon Capital Associates Inc.
Tandon's album will compete for the award against works by four other musicians, including well-known composer Bela Fleck, according to the Grammy website.
She did the vocals and the composition for Soul Call, while the orchestral arrangements were done by Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, assisted by Snehasish Majumdar.
Tandon has served in various roles at many organisations, including a 11-year stint at McKinsey and Company. She is a trustee of New York University and the American India Foundation.
Going by the New York University website, Tandon is a trained classical singer and lives in New York City with her husband, Ranjan, and daughter, Lita.
Her younger sister Indra Nooyi, who is the chief of global beverages and snacks major Pepsico, is one of the most well-known faces of corporate America. Nooyi has consistently featured as among the most powerful women in business today in rankings by various magazines.
Tandon is not the only India-origin musician in the race for a Grammy this year. Among others, India-origin composer Vijay Iyer has also been nominated for a Grammy under the 'Best Jazz Instrumental Album' category.
Music composer A.R. Rahman, sitar expert Ravi Shankar and tabla maestro Zakir Hussain are among the Indians that have won a Grammy. In February this year, Rahman won two Grammys - for 'Best Film Song' and 'Best Soundtrack' - for composing the soundtrack of multiple Oscar-winning movie, Slumdog Millionaire.
