Iran hangs four murderers in public: Report
Iran on Thursday hanged four men convicted of murder and rape, Fars news agency reported, saying the executions were carried out in public in the Southern port city of Bandar Abbas.
The men were not identified and no additional information was given on the crimes for which they were convicted.
The latest hangings bring to 101 the number of executions so far in 2011 in Iran, according to an AFP count based on media reports.
There were 179 hangings reported in 2010. In 2009, 388 people were executed, according to international human rights groups, making Iran second only to China in the number of people it put to death.
The Islamic republic says the death penalty is essential to maintain law and order and is applied only after exhaustive judicial proceedings.
Narcotics trafficking is punishable by death in Iran, as are murder, rape, armed robbery and adultery.
