ISI taps IM’s Nepal base to sneak in arms

Despite Pakistan’s repeated assurances that it was not aiding and abetting terror in India, Pakistani national and Jaish-e- Mohammed militant Mohammed Adil, alias Ajmal, has told interrogators that Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence was working in close coordination with Riyaz and Iqbal Bhatkal, the founders of Indian Mujahideen who operate out of Karachi.

In fact, in his interrogation report Adil has stated that the attack on foreign tourists at Jama Masjid in September last year was planned by Riyaz Bhatkal with the 'full knowledge and consent of the ISI' as it wanted to bring India to disrepute globally since the attack happened on the eve of the Commonwealth Games.

The Jaish militant, arrested along with five others on Wednesday, also disclosed that the ISI has helped IM build a formidable network in Nepal close to the Indian border.

This helps IM operatives carry out their activities, particularly recruitment and smuggling in arms and ammunition through the highly porous Indo-Nepal border.

This also explains why areas in north Bihar, particularly Sitamarhi, Darbhanga and Madhubani, which are also close to the border, have been the IM’s favourite hunting grounds.

IM bases along the border were also frequented by the present IM kingpin in the country, Ahmad Siddi Bappa, alias Shahrukh.

The Bhatkal brothers, after receiving instructions from their ISI handlers, would pass them on to Shahrukh who made several trips to Nepal and north Bihar to recruit and facilitate arms smuggling.

Though the security agencies are carrying out further search operations in Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka and Chennai, investigators are extremely tight-lipped about Adil’s disclosure regarding
Shahrukh’s network in Mumbai.

"Adil has given some information about Mumbai as well which is being followed up," an
intelligence official remarked.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
