Jordanian kills wife to 'cleanse his honour'

A Jordanian prosecutor on Friday charged a man with premeditated murder after he confessed to killing his 22-year-old wife over her alleged 'bad behaviour', a judicial official said.

"The suspect, in his thirties, stabbed the mother of two with a knife 10 times at dawn today," in Ruseifeh, southeast of Amman, the official told AFP.

"He handed himself in to police and confessed to the crime, claiming he wanted to cleanse his honour after he suspected his wife of bad behaviour."

Murder is punishable by death in Jordan but in so-called 'honour killings' courts can commute or reduce sentences, particularly if the victim's family asks for leniency.

Between 15 and 20 women are murdered in such killings each year in the Arab kingdom, despite government efforts to curb such crimes.
