LSE director quits over Gaddafi links

London: The director of the London School of Economics (LSE) has resigned over financial ties with the family of embattled Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, BBC reported Friday.

In 2009, Howard Davies approved the decision to accept a 300,000-pound ($500,000) research grant from a fund run by Gaddafi's eldest son, Saif al Islam.

He also visited Libya to advise the government about financial reforms.

"I have concluded that it would be right for me to step down. The short point is that I am responsible for the school's reputation, and that has suffered," Davies said.

Gaddafi and his family came under increased international pressure for a violent crackdown on protesters, who demanded the long-time leader to step down. The protests, which began February 14, has claimed thousands of lives and left scores injured.
