Maldives leader promises to respect democracy: US

Maldives' new president Mohamed Waheed told a US official on Tuesday that he will respect democracy in the archipelago after his predecessor resigned following protests, the State Department said.

Waheed spoke by telephone with Robert Blake, the US assistant secretary of state for South Asia, and "expressed his commitment to a peaceful transition of power," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters.
