Man torn to pieces by bears in Vilyuchinsk
A man was torn to pieces by two wild bears in Vilyuchinsk town in Russia, an official said on Sunday. The man's body was found at the banks of Krasheninnikov Bay at around 23:00 (local time) on May 12, the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry branch in Kamchatka territory reported.
One of the bears was shot down by a police official but the other managed to escape, they said, adding that a search has been launched for it. This is the first human death by bear attack this year in the region. Hunters killed another aggressive bear last month.
Kamchatka brown bears are one of the biggest species in the whole family. A grown-up male can weigh 700 kilograms. Its body length can reach three meters.
Bears often show their wild temper. Many encounters with bears end tragically for humans. Brown bears killed three people in the region in 2011. Foresters had to shoot about 50 beasts whose aggressive behavior was an open threat to people's safety.
Experts believe that bears visit humans to make a feast of leftovers which people throw into garbage containers. They've called on the local residents to refrain from provoking the beasts.
