Manmohan Singh condoles loss of lives in flood-hit Australia

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in flood-hit Queensland province of Australia and expressed his readiness to extend India's help to the country.

"The Prime Minister wrote to Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and S.M. Krishna wrote to his counterpart Kevin Rudd expressing their deep sorrow on loss of life and property in the wake of floods in Queensland," said a statement issued by the Canberra-based Indian high commission on Tuesday.

"On behalf of people of India and on their own behalf, they conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and for the extensive loss of property and material damage," the statement read.

"They said India stood in solidarity with the people of Australia and also expressed the readiness to assist with support and logical assistance to the floods torn country," it added.

About 30 people died in Queensland. The flooding has inundated 30,000 homes and businesses. The price tag from the relentless floods was already at $5 billion before muddy brown waters swamped Brisbane last week.
